The Idea Explorer helps you compare App Store categories and discover ideas.
App Idea Explorer
The Idea Explorer helps you find app ideas by uncovering underserved markets using App Store data. Before getting into tool operation, some background information is helpful.
The following video is recommended to help understand App Recon concepts
Getting a viable product idea
To get a viable product idea, ideally two conditions should be present:
A Strong Market. Many people have a compelling problem they want solved.
Poor Solutions. The existing solutions are inadequate.
Getting a viable app idea
Translating the above to the world of apps, we want to find existing apps with:
A Strong Market. An existing app with a lot downloads indicates a strong market.
Poor Solutions. An existing app with poor ratings indicates a poor solution.
So the key to finding a good app idea is identifying an existing app that many people have downloaded but rated poorly. Once you do that, you have a strong starting point for your own app - one that either complements or directly competes with the existing app.
What's the process for finding an idea?
Pick a genre. Use the Idea Explorer to pick a desirable genre.
Pick a target app. Find a weak app with a strong market. This can be achieved manually by searching through App Store category/genre or by using pre-filtered candidates by clicking on the ‘App Ideas’ link in the Idea Explorer.
Evaluate app weaknesses. Read app reviews to understand why people don't like the app.
Implement your own 'improved' app. Design and implement your own app, addressing discovered user complaints.
What do you mean by 'desirable' genre?
The best way to determine if a genre is ‘desirable’ is to evaluate your business strategy and then use the tool to evaluate openings.
It’s been shown that ensuring your all your apps fall within the same general theme is highly advantageous since it allows you to cross advertise. Therefore, determine which genres you are already competing in, or if you have no existing solutions determine what you can compete in. Then see how those genres stack up against each other in the Idea Explorer.
How does the tool work?
The browser displays opportunity levels, raw data and links to ideas for the different App Store genres.
In addition to standard 'data' columns, the idea browser contains 'opportunity' columns which can be colorized to let you know which aspects of the genre have good or bad opportunity factors.
Opportunity factors can be Good, Fair and Poor
How good or bad an opportunity factor is is related to the definition of 'opportunity' above - the stronger the market and weaker the app, the better the potential.
The last column contains links for App Ideas. These are reports covering specific apps in each genre. These apps have been analyzed for their opportunity potential
Column headers sort and filter.
Opportunity column percentiles rank the genre within the active genre list. A 100% means the genre is higher than all others
